APPRAISER COMMENTS:

This is a contemporary Sanguine (red) drawing of a fat cat being
held by a woman. It is signed Botero and dated 96. Botero’s Sanguine
drawings don’t come on the market often and are therefore more valuable
than some of his other works. For purposes of this appraisal we are
going to assume that this piece is genuine. We would like to point out,
however, that the signature on this piece appears to be identical to
that on your other Botero pieces. When we see signatures so closely
similar, it sends up a red flag. It means there is a good possibility
that the pieces may be forged or otherwise copied. We would strongly
advise you to have your Botero pieces authenticated by an expert who can
look at the signatures side by side. Based on comparative data for
other Botero Sanguine drawings recently sold, and considering the
similarities and differences for the condition, size, artistic merit,
and age, we have valued the subject drawing as indicated.
