NY: Selmar Hess, 1892. COMPLETE FOUR-VOLUME SET. Large, heavy volumes, each approximately 9.5 x 12 inches. Covers with gilt lettering on leather background. Corners worn to boards at tips. Subtitled ‘A Revised American Edition of the Reader’s Handbook,’ it contains the original English content but updates it to include ‘characters and sketches found in American novels, poetry and drama.’ Alphabetically arranged. Illustrated with photogravures, etchings, wood engravings and typogravures. Each volume has frontispiece depicting: Ichabod Crane, La Cigale, The Death of Minnehaha , Katrina van Tassel. Hardcover. Very good condition.

History/Provenance: This item was discovered in my in-laws attic when we were cleaning it out. We have no idea how long the books were up there. The house was built in 1900. It could have been something left by someone living there many years ago. We cleaned the attic out 23 years ago and these volumes have been on our bookshelves since then.
