APPRAISER COMMENTS:
Joan Miro (1893-1983) of Spain was a prolific abstract artist who
created in every conceivable media. He had thousands of pieces to his
credit including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, photographs, and
ceramics. Miro’s style was influenced in varying degrees by Surrealism
and Dada, yet he rejected membership to any artistic movement. If this
multimedia piece is genuine, it is worth about $200,000, However, we
believe this is a fake. The comments by the current owner regarding the
difficulty of obtaining authentication are simply ridiculous. One does
not need to speak to an artist’s family – there are other ways to
establish the truth. One is the signature, which we checked against
samples in our database. It is suspiciously different from any of our
samples, particularly in the M. As for the style, it bears a resemblance
to Miro’s, but typically Miro’s work isn’t quite so disjointed. All in
all, we would be very hesitant to appraise this as the genuine article.
